About Mary Balfour:

Mary Balfour was born in Derry in 1775 and died in 1820. Upon the death of her parents she moved with her sisters to Limavady where she was the schoolteacher. She was a member in 1808 of the Harp Society committee founded by Bunting to teach blind children to play the harp in the traditional Irish manner. When Bunting needed verse to accompany his harp music, she contributed eight pieces. Her work, Hope: A Poetical Essay containing some translations from the Irish was published in 1810. She later moved to Belfast in 1813 in which place she opened a school.
